The suspect in the Friday morning brutal killing of two children in Nyamache, in Kisii County been arrested.

Sub-County Police boss Kemboi Kipkulei said the arrest of Nelson Momanyi gives a glimmer of hope in the efforts by detectives to unravel the motive of the gruesome beheading of the pair.

The police chief spoke of machete cuts to the neck and the heads of the victims in the heinous act that rattled the sleepy village.

The children's mother had already left for the farm when the father allegedly swung the machete on their necks.

They were aged 10 months and two and a half years respectively. Villagers suspect the Momanyi had mental health problems and often tormented his family.

He was in and out of the hospital in the recent past, said one villager. The last medical visit was two months ago at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Residents said they even raised some cash for his medication. Kipkulei said the information provided would form part of the probe as detectives dig through to unravel the motive of the killing.

"Whether he had a mental problem or not will be ascertained by medical experts, already we have the suspect in custody," said the regional police boss.

Meanwhile, grief and shock continued to grip the Kiobegi area following the killing.

The incident comes days apart after a minor baby Junior Sagini, was attacked and his eyes gouged out in Kitutu Chache North.

And in Nyanchwa, in Kitutu Chache South, a woman has since been arrested for assaulting her partner, nearly copping off his manhood in a domestic squabble.

In Mosocho, still in Kitutu Chache South, a granny was killed by the love of her life after a night quarrel.

In Nyamache, the lifeless bodies were found dumped on a maize farm.
