Three students died on Friday when a 52-seater school bus they were travelling rolled off a cliff in Kabarnet, Baringo county.

Ten casualties, including the driver, are in Intensive Care Unit at Baringo County Referral Hospital.

The students from Lokichar Secondary School in Turkana county had come from the North Rift Games at Kabarnet Boys High School when the accident occurred.

Baringo county police commander Peter Ndung'u said the driver lost control of the bus that veered off the road and rolled down the 200 metre cliff.

"We will keep briefing you on more details as we follow up," he said.

Gideon Kipror, a witness, said he heard a loud bang which he later confirmed was the sound of the bus rolling down the cliff.

"I heard voices of passengers inside screaming for help, then I rushed out to see if I could assist," he said.

Hundreds of residents turned up at the scene as police and Kenya Red Cross officials carried out rescue operations.

Deputy Governor Mathew Tuitoek and Health chief officer Richard Koech condoled with the victims' families.
