Will Yoweri Museveni's heavy-handed treatment of Bobi Wine be his downfall?

Bobi Wine was mostly remembered as a veteran Ugandan artist who had many beefs with fellow musician Bebe Cool.

But since his emergence into the political spotlight last year, he has become a more polarizing figure in Uganda.

The results have been predictable for an astute political observer of Ugandan politics. Yoweri Museveni is by extension the law and anyone who gets in his way is steamrolled. Look at the travails of Kizza Besigye.

Bobi Wine has captured the hearts and minds of the Ugandan public and many internationally after his arrest this month. What happened exactly?

Supporters of independent candidate Kasiano Wadri had obstructed and attacked Museveni’s convoy in the northern town of Arua. This led to clashes between security forces and protesters. The incidents happened on 14 August, 2018.

Later on Bobi Wine, an outspoken critic of Uganda's leader Yoweri Museveni said that police had shot at his vehicle killing his driver. Wine was then arrested the next day on possible charges of unlawful possession of firearms and inciting of violence.

He was then taken to a military court on 16 August 2018 and charged with illegal possession of weapons. The Times reported it appeared Bobi had been tortured before appearing in the court.

The government has denied repeatedly the allegations of torture. With popular protests growing in Uganda and internationally demanding Bobi's release, he was then set free in the military court only to be rearrested shortly by the police.

He will be charged in civilian court now. The question is? Will Museveni's treatment of Bobi Wine while incarcerated have a lasting impact on his already tarnished "legacy"?

It will. A big one. In Bobi Wine the Ugandan people might have someone they can rally to. Someone that can unite the opposition to the dictatorship of Museveni.

And it was all started by Yoweri himself. His heavy-handed actions this month against the former musician have turned him into a martyr, something that leaders like Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela enjoyed.

The only question is? Can Bobi mantain the momentum going forward?
