In a 1987 New York Times article, science journalist Daniel Goleman disclosed what has really surprised me. He argues that over time, married couples begin to look alike; from their facial expressions to the way they behave.

"Couples who originally bore no particular resemblance to each other when first married had, after 25 years of marriage, come to resemble each other, although the resemblance may be subtle, according to a new research report," he opines. This is a conclusion done by Robert Zajonc, a psychologist at the University of Michigan at the time of the publication.

The experiment carried out entailed the sampled people being photographed while standing in front of blacked-out backgrounds. The couples, who were 50-60 years old and lived in either Michigan or Wisconsin, showed similarities in their photos. They had been married earlier in their 20's.

"Facial mimicry allows a truer empathy because it triggers the same inner state. Couples can understand each other much better when this happens," Zanjoc said in a 1985 article published in Science Magazine. The blood flow to the brain and face improves when the couples are happier with each other. They then get used to smiling and taking care of each other. With time, they tend to look alike.

You can.
