Alphonse Kambu a UN employee who allegedly battered wife was today arraigned in Nairobi Mililani magistrate court. Kambu is charged with grievous assault causing grievous bodily harm to Ruth Gakii. The accused appeared before chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo who heard from the prosecution that Kambu does not enjoy any immunity from UN as it was earlier alleged.

The prosecution said that they enquired from UN, who confirmed that the accused does not enjoy any immunity. This arose when his lawyer requested to defer plea, basing the argument on immunity by the accused's employer.

The magistrate, however, allowed the accused time to deliberate on the facts of the case with his lawyer who had received instructions to represent him a few hours to plea taking. The plea has been deferred to the afternoon. Alphonse Kambu was arrested yesterday morning by the police after a two-day search.
