Most of us have quite interesting back stories. We have tales about how we became who we are and what we are. Simply put, everyone starts somewhere. However, not many are comfortable opening up about their journey to the world, for the fear of being bad mouthed.

Well, that’s not the case with presenter , the dude who keeps ladies glued to his show . He’s down-to-earth, nerdy (I’ll tell you why) and a go-getter. Not many know his true life story because he’s a bit laid back.

“I always call it ‘the fluke audition’ because I was at a place called Alfajiri along Dennis Pritt road. What happened was, I went there for lunch and there was this long line of people. I wondered what the hell was going on. As the waiter was going to get my change and everything I decided to join the line and see what happens,” he said.

That’s quite unusual right? Have you ever left the waiter with your money just to find out what’s going on in the vicinity? Sit tight and get to know the outcome. He would then find out that it was a radio audition. When he told me this, I remembered when BBC mistakenly interviewed a taxi driver thinking that it was a technology expert!

Anyway, moving on, dude went on and sat with the panel and was given a challenge.

“They told me, ‘imagine that a 2pac song has ended, how would you introduce that show?’ I started doing it…” he revealed.

“That was Tupac Shakur  “Dear Mama” playing right here on Hot 96, a very good evening to you...I’m Mike Mondo…” he reenacted the whole scene to me. I was moved. That’s not your typical interview!

The way he did it was impressive that he got a call from Hot 96 three days later. They wanted him to start working with station.

“The funny thing is that I had just quit my job as a nurse. I was jobless; I had come to Nairobi to look for an opportunity,” he adds. He used to work for an NGO called Kenya Association for Prevention of TB and Lung Diseases. It was based in Kilifi District Hospital. He had worked there for one year and did not feel it was the right place for him.

Mike currently works at XFM, the number one rock music station in Nairobi. He has grown a large, loyal fan base that has seen his life change really fast. Apart from that, he’s a frequent Voice Over artist working with various agencies. He’s also a businessman. Together with a tech company based in this town, he provides solutions to various businesses. That’s where the nerd factor comes in.

The celebrated presenter plans to start a farming business in the near future. He has bought land in Lukenya in preparation for his retirement. As if radio is not enough, he also has a TV stint in mind.

Are you planning to join the media realm too? Well, Mike says he has gone through a lot. The first month at Hot 96 wasn’t smooth sailing for him at all. In fact, he wanted to quit. The audience was used to the host prior him and he wasn’t skilled in operating the studio equipment. The resident DJ encouraged him to stay and yeah...he got a hang of it.

Over the years, he has developed thick skin to ward off negative criticism that’s meant to bring him down. That’s the kind of stuff you’ll find in media. Be braced. Just like Mike, you can make it too! Follow your heart, be true to your inner voice.
