The voter registration for Kenyans living in the diaspora within Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Africa is now on and ends on Monday 6th March 2017.

It will be the second time for Kenyans in the diaspora to vote for a presidential candidate of their choice. The first time that it happened was in 2013.

The IEBC is out to increase voter numbers this year, and since the registration of voters within Kenya was concluded, the diaspora holds hope to bring in more numbers. For a Kenyan in the diaspora to register, they need to be a Kenyan citizen. That could sound obvious, but this shall be verified by the following documents.

Those interested in the process will need to carry their valid Kenyan passports to the designated registration centres. There is a centre in the following cities: Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Kigali, Bujumbura and Pretoria.

The prospective voter should be a Kenyan of sound mind, and should never have been convicted on an election offence in the preceding five years.

Once you are registered, you do not need to register again. It is an electoral offence to be registered more than once.

You may not be aware of it, but a person who is registered more than once is liable to pay a fine or get imprisoned for at least a year.

There are those voters who could have moved out of Kenya within the last five years. In this case, they shall be asked to present their old voters' card, then fill out a form for request to transfer. The transfer will be effected immediately, and the voter will be set to vote, come August 8th 2017 elections.
