While many avoid heavy make up at the gym to allow their skin to breathe, others choose to apply a light amount in a bid to improve their confidence.

And while this is perfectly okay, there are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure your workout doesn't leave you with panda eyes and a patchy face.

So to help women master the art of gym make up, FEMAIL spoke with the owner of Australian make up brand , Kate Flammea, who has more than ten years experience in the industry.

Kate's main recommendation is that you keep your make up minimal when you're working out.

'I would recommend the bare necessities that will make you feel comfortable,' she said.

'A lip balm to keep your lips moisturised is always a good idea and concealer and waterproof mascara are essentials for me.'

As you will be working up a sweat, Kate advised applying make up that is as breathable as possible

'If you have imperfections, I would suggest a BB or CC cream. This is a lightweight option and is kinder to pores,' she said.

'Opt for natural, mineral or organic makeup as these will work better with sweat and not block pores as much as products with harsher ingredients.

While foundation application over the entire face is 'okay', it's best to use concealer to spot treat imperfections instead.

If you're applying mascara before you hit up the treadmill you should also be using one that is waterproof.

'It's not fun when you wipe sweat off with a towel and get a mascara smudge across your face,' she said.

To lock everything in place so you don't have to stress about your makeup trickling down your face as you work out, complete the look with a finishing spray or a facial mist.

'Avoid glittery products and wear natural shades. Wear the bare minimal that will make you feel comfortable and it's best to not over do it,' Kate said.

'It's important for your skin to be able to breath.'
