As a family in Mahanga, Vihiga county continues to mourn the death of their loved ones, who perished last week in a grisly road accident, disturbing details have emerged.

The accident which occurred at Kamukuywa Bridge along Webuyu-Kitale highway on Monday claimed a total of 16 people from Mahanga village and left two children hospitalized. The victims were returning from a reunion at their relative's home in Matunda, Kitale when the accident occurred.

"Quick recovery to my son Dwayne Oyando and my nephew Godly Okenye, recuperating at Bungoma Referral Hosp. The Almighty had a reason to give you a second chance," George Oguso, who lost nine relatives including wife and two children in the accident posted on Facebook.

According to sources, 19 people died in the gory accident and Oguso's family is calling upon well-wishers, the county and national governments to help it raise funds to give their loved ones a decent send-off.

"We have a budget of Sh3.5 million ahead of their planned burial on December 23. My worry is we may not be able to raise the money on our own by then. The burial expenses include mortuary fees," said a family member.

During an interview with SDE, George Oguso and his brother were in a different car which was ahead of the matatu which was carrying the rest of their family members. Mr Kegode, Oguso's brother revealed what happened on that fateful night.

"We were ahead of the matatu carrying our relatives by about three kilometres. We missed the truck by sheer luck. I tried calling them to warn them about the truck, which did not have reflectors and was at a blind spot, but I could not reach them because of poor network. Calls were not going through,” explained a family member.

The emotional father narrated how he lost his wife and children. His late son had just completed KCSE exams and they were waiting for the results.

"Nine of those who perished in the accident are close family members. They included my wife Ednah Nyaboke, son Derrick Oguso, daughter Ivy Mwenesi, brother Godfrey Ilahalwa, sister Joyce Oguso, sister-in-law Abigael Kegode, niece Caroline Vihenda and nephews Joseph Kegode and Ethan Ilahalwa," he said.

Adding that;

"This is very painful. We were also awaiting results of my last born child who had sat his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams at Vihiga Boys. I don’t have words to express what I am going through now. The family needs financial assistance to conduct the burials. We also need counselling."

The Oguso's are hoping that Kenyans are going to stand with them during this trying moments.

"Hi friends,let me take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support during this trying moment,we as the OGUSO family we have come up with a pay bill number 632999,a cc name "The Oguso Nine"we request all the wishers can come in and help us give our loved ones a decent send off.Thanks all!' read a post on George Oguso's Facebook.
