An early morning accident between along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway has claimed the lives of four people.

The lives were lost after a lorry rammed into a 10-seater matatu in Wayani township near Kibwezi town.

Two passengers and the driver of the ill-fated matatu lost their lives on the spot, while the third person was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Eyewitnesses say the lorry which was heading towards Nairobi was attempting to overtake the Kibwezi-bound matatu when they collided.

The matatu was reportedly on high speed and was trying to overtake the lorry as another vehicle was approaching but the driver of the lorry refused to give way.

John Mutua who happened to be around the scene of the accident told journalists that they hard a loud bang before rushing to check what had happened.

“A loud bang drew us to the scene and on arrival, we found that a lorry had hit the matatu,” he said.

The driver who is also the owner of the van died on the spot while the conductor sustained injuries and he was rushed to Kibwezi Sub-County Hospital with three other passengers.

Makindu OCPD Henrietta Wanyama confirmed the incident saying three people were confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital while the fourth passed away while the third died receiving treatment.

The wreckage of the matatu was towed to Makindu Police Station.
