The allegations leveled against Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti are nothing new. I guess there is alot of truth in the adage, “there is nothing new under the sun”. Especially when it comes to the August House. A place where ironically, everyone is give the title “Honourable So-and-so” yet the allegations are never honourable.
A quick look at past and present Parliaments paints a rather bleak picture of allegations of violence against women and in one incident, the accused simply married his alleged victim. Can you imagine that? Being asked to marry your alleged attacker?
Check out the list below of the MPs who have been alleged to have violated women below:
1. Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi
In May last year, standardmedia.co.ke reported that a woman had accused Kiambu Senator nicknamed ‘Wamatangi’ of rape.
According to the woman’s sworn affidavit at Nairobi Children’s Court, the incident occurred on July 18th 2006 while she was working as a house help for Wamatangi and she was impregnated in the process.
2. Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti
The Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti is the latest lawmaker to be accused of rape. In March 2015, a woman alleges that the MP lured her to his office to discuss some public relations business deal before raping her.
The Star reports that according to the woman, Mwiti postponed their meeting at his office in Westlands, Nairobi until 10 pm. The woman, who is married, claims she was then subjected to an involuntary HIV test before she was beaten and raped.
The matter is still under investigation. The MP has denied the accusations and even offered to help with the investigations.
3. Turbo MP Elisha Busienei
Turbo MP Elisha Busienei allegedly made sexual advances towards Taveta Woman Representative Joyce Lay last week, while the two, among other legislators, accompanied President Kenyatta to Tokyo Japan as part of the Defense and Foreign Affairs committee.
Lay who was booked on the same hotel floor with Busienei raised the issue through the committee’s WhatsApp group claiming that the Turbo legislator insulted her and slammed a door in her face after she turned down his sexual advances.
4. Juja MP Francis Waititu
Juja MP Francis Waititu made headlines late February when one Susan Wambui who claimed to be his CDF secretary accused him of sexual harassment and death threats after she declined to give in to his sexual advances.
The MP has denied the allegations terming them “wild and malicious”. He reads political machinations in the matter.
5. Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko & (6.) Nairobi Women rep. Rachel Shebesh’
Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi alia ‘Sonko’ and the City women representative Rachel Shebesh were the talk of town in late 2013 after images of the two in a compromising situation surfaced online. Although the authenticity of the photos could not be verified, they sent tongues wagging as the two lawmakers are both married.
7. Mount Elgon MP John Serut
John Serut is the current MP for Mt. Elgon. He also represented the same constituency in the 9th parliament. It is during his tenure in 2003 that he named in parliament as the member who had tried to sexually assault an employee of parliament.
The MP denied the accusations at a press conference that same week in which he was accompanied by his wife.
8. Moffat Maitha – Kangundo
Moffat Maitha was MP for Kangundo in the 10th parliament. He was accused of defiling a 15-year-old pupil of Kisukioni Primary school in Matungulu in June 2012.

9. Nicholas Biwott – Former Cabinet minister
It is alleged that In November 1995, during the Commonwealth Head Of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Auckland New Zealand, then former powerful minister, Nicholas Biwott was quietly deported from the Pacific Ocean Island for what New Zealand authorities described as indecent behavior.
According to network54.com the then Kerio South MP had been accused of molesting a hotel chambermaid by exposing himself. The sex scandal earned Biwott another name tag-Bull of Auckland.
10. Julius Sunkuli – Former Cabinet Minister
In 1999, two schoolgirls claimed they had been defiled by Julius Sunkuli, who was then a cabinet minister in the government of Daniel Arap Moi. One of the girls sensationally claimed that the offence was committed on the carpet inside the minister’s official government office.
Sunkuli denied all the allegations and was never charged in court.
