George Ikua, husband to the late cancer warrior Janet Kanini has thanked his friends for being with him and his family when they were going through a difficult time.

Janet died on April 1st this year and her family has been trying to accept that she is no more.

"GRIEVING IS A VERY PERSONAL PROCESS. IT’S LIKE A MOVIE YOU WATCHED AND NOW YOU REMEMBER EVERY FINE DETAIL. I SHARED 14 YEARS WITH JANET. HER ABSENCE HAS LEFT A HUGE VACUUM.

MY FOUR-YEAR-OLD DAUGTHER JASMINE IS STILL TRYING TO UNDERSTAND HER MOTHERS LOSS.

IT IS DIFFICULT TO TELL HER WHY HER MOTHER CANNOT COME HOME FOR JUST 10 MINUTES, SAY HI, AND GO BACK TO HEAVEN. IT IS ALWAYS DIFFICULT TO RESPOND TO THIS QUESTION. MY SON ON THE OTHER HAND KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED AND IT IS VERY PAINFUL FOR HIM," HE TOLD THE NAIROBIAN during a recent interview.

George, who has been busy taking care of his two children and focusing on the Kanini 4 Africa Foundation, has turned a year older today and he shared a touching message with his followers. Here is what he had to say;

"My good friends, thanks for the well-wishes as I start another year. It is the first one, in 14 years, without Janet but I believe she was gobbling some cake wherever she is.(Miss you gal). I was surrounded by over a dozen children as I cut mine and can only give thanks for the grace Jaz , Pedro and I have received from everyone in the last few months.

Mortality is part of us, but it doesn't make it easier for those left behind, but it is part of all of us. We need to embrace the fickleness of our existence and live like its the only life you got- because sadly it is the only one you got.

Don't worry about your mundane problems or opinions, they are more perception than reality. For some, to get just one more day alive would be the greatest gift.

In this year I hope we can all be ourselves and live a life full of blessings, laughter and self-discovery, devoid of hate, judgment and gossip.

May you all find love, joy, success, forgiveness, grace and health. Do have a happiest year."
