From street kid to star to the grave: Things you didn't know about Papa Dennis

Award-winning singer Papa Dennis was found dead on Friday in Pangani after jumping from Kirima Building in Pangani.

The gospel artiste was described as a reserved, humble and down to earth as euologised by many.

Well, below are the things you didn't know about Papa Dennis.

1. He was born and raised in Matunda, Kakamega county.

2. He was an orphan.

His mother passed away in 2006. In a previous interview with Mpasho.co.ke, he said,

I started from humble beginnings, singing in church as a member of the praise and worship team. I wanted to pursue music from an early age but my dreams were hindered by the death of my mother, who was taking care of me and my twin brother. After her death, in 2006, our lives became miserable and I was forced to do odd jobs just to make a living while also trying to save for my music.

I USED TO SELL CHARCOAL, HAWK GROUNDNUTS IN BUS TERMINUS, PLOUGH FOR 10 BOB, WAS EMPLOYED AS A CATTLE HERDER AND ALSO USED TO HARVEST MAIZE AND GOT PAID SH15 PER SACK.

He was also crowned winner at the 2015 Mwafaka Awards, 2016 and 2017 Pulse Music Video Awards.

From expensive music videos to designer clothes, shoes and watches, Papa's opulent lifestyle always left tongues wagging.

In several media interviews he talked about spending nothing less than Ksh 2million on videos, which were mostly shot in South Africa, he revealed he owned suits and watches over half a million. In one of his last interviews in 2019, he said that he had Ksh50 million in his three bank accounts.

6. Had a twin brother named Simon Mwangi.

7. Worked with Maliza Umaskini record label.

He was discovered a few months after the 2007 post-election violence.

'.... I kept taking part in various talent competitions until I was spotted by Sadat Muhindi of Maliza Umaskini Foundation, who took me in and, as they say, the rest is history,' he said in a previous media interview.

But he parted ways with the record label early 2019 and had not been signed under any management at the time of his death.

Speaking in an interview with Mpasho, his ex-manager said,

HIS CONTRACT with Maliza Umaskini EXPIRED AT THE BEGINNING OF LAST YEAR.

8. Papa Dennis didn't compete school.

He droped out of school to work and take care of his sibblings. In a past media interview, he said,

After the death of my mother, I never got a chance to complete school. But I sacrificed, doing odd jobs, to pay for my twin brother’s (Simon Mwangi) education until he was done with his secondary studies.

Papa Dennis later enrolled in private classes, where he was learning English.

9. He did collabos with top artistes among them Dady Owen, Ray C, Flavour just to mention but a few.

Some of his songs include Foundation, Tornado, Makekes, Nashukuru, Injili etc.
