Last week, the nation was left in shock after videos of general service Unit (GSU) officers beating University of Nairobi students surfaced online.

In one of the videos, GSU officers could be seen assaulting and beating students using batons, whips and kicks at one of the hostels known as Prefabs. According to students who fell victim of the brutality, the officers used teargas canisters to smoke out students. In an interview with the Standard newspaper, some of the traumatized students narrated how they were beaten by the men who are supposed to provide security to the nation's citizens.

David, a first-year student studying microprocessor technology and Instrumentation who had barely stayed a month on campus, told how he and his friends were ambushed by the GSU officers while relaxing in their room at Prefabs hostels.

"I and two of my friends were resting in the hostel then I HEARD A KNOCK ON THE DOOR, THE POLICE STORMED INTO THE ROOM and started beating me up and ordered me to go to every door and tell the students to come out," he said.

The poor student was left with severe injuries to his legs, knees and head and called his sister who is a pharmacist to help him.

"She is the one who prescribed some drugs and gave me the medication."

The police brutality took place moments after students from the institution had protested the arrest of former SONU chairman now Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. Many students lost their learning materials among other valuables in the process and Maurice, a fourth-year student also narrated to The Standard the horrible encounter.

"We were in the architecture studio when the police stormed in and told us to put down our laptops, mobile phones, and money. they then told us to lie down," recounted Maurice.

Adding;

"If I could get my laptop back, I would be happy because it has all my projects and my portfolio that shows all the work I have done."

Many have condemned the barbaric act among them NTV reporter Ken Mijungu who has threatened to resign if IG Boinnet doesn't take action on the matter.

Another student also narrated the horrific encounter with the GSU officers claiming that they did not spare anyone.

"I saw five GSU officers calling students who were hiding. They were four boys and a girl. The girl was beaten until she fainted then they went after the boys," he said.

Do you think justice will be served for the students who were injured?
