American media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been one of the most influential women in the world for quite a long time. She has always admired the late Wangari Maathai‘s work as an environmental conservationist. Oprah has a passion for Africa too; she has The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, a charity with a leadership academy in South Africa.
Maathai is remembered for her relentless efforts in making the world a greener place and won a Nobel Peace Prize for this in 2004. Her NGO Green Belt Movement has continued her legacy since she passed away in 2011 after battling Ovarian Cancer.
On Sept. 17th, 2015, Oprah took to social media to honor Maathai. She said that in remembering her, she seeks to educate young women for a better society.
“In remembrance of Wangari Maathai, #mylittlething is educating girls to become leaders in their families, in their communities and in our world.”
