The robbery was discovered on Sunday afternoon when the bank manager was informed by the ICT department that the ATM signal was down at the branch.

Mr Simon Kamau Kuria - an employee at the bank - was sent to check what was amiss but he reported that the PIN pad had been tampered with.

It is widely believed that the theft was an inside job even as security men who were guarding the bank insist that they did not hear a thing. The suspects might have had information about how the bank is set up given the way they drilled the wall and escaped unnoticed.

Addressing journalists, Nairobi Police Boss Japheth Koome said the suspects disabled CCTV cameras and alarm systems before drilling a hole which they used to get gain access.

He further said that the gang broke into the server room, two safes and made away with an unknown amount of money.

The police recovered two gas cylinders - which the gang used to burn and break the safes to access the cash - breaking tools and two blankets.

Investigations into the incident have already began. Senior bank officials are reconciling books to establish how much was stolen.
