Nairobi governor Evans Kidero has accused city senator Mike Sonko of running a parallel government which he says is funded by proceeds from drug trafficking.

In a thinly veiled attack on Sonko, Kidero said the city was slowly turning into a drug hub ran by barons who had assumed leadership positions and were now providing public services to city residents.

"Nairobi is the centre of drug trafficking. People have been named to be involved in drugs and no action has been taken against them," Kidero said after attending a church service at AIC Milimani on Sunday.

"Where drug cartels fight they tend to get into positions of authority. This happened in Jamaica, Cuba and even in Colombia."

The governor said drug lords are providing parallel services in the city than those given by the government to influence the common population so that they can get their way into government.

Currently, the senator is providing a wide range of services for city residents including free ambulance evacuation, fire response and offering wedding limousines to couples.

Although Kidero did not mention Sonko by name, the governor did not mince words as to who he meant.

"Any services given must be given within the confines and provisions of the law," Kidero stated in reference to a drove of 'charity' activities undertaken by the flamboyant senator through his Sonko Rescue Team.

The governor noted that drug trafficking poses a serious danger to the future generation if the city is not weeded of barons .

When reached for comment by the Star, Sonko said 'I won't respond to petty issues."

The senator has on numerous occasions exonerated himself from accusations of being involved in drug trafficking and instead accused the governor of abetting corruption at City Hall.

"I was elected to serve the great people of Nairobi and I think the governor should be serious and should concentrate in delivering services to the great people of Nairobi. He is failing in service delivery and should not divert issues," Sonko said.

He asked the governor to explain how a corruption cartel which froze Mumias sugar has found its way at City Hall.

Sonko has on several occasions been seen dishing large amounts of money to individuals and organizations that seek his help.
