Singer Maia von Lekow's first feature documentary together with Chris King has been shortlisted for the 93rd Academy Awards (Oscars) in the Best International Feature Film Category.

The Letter is set along the coast of Kenya where a frenzied mix of consumerism and Christianity is turning hundreds of families against their elders, branding them as witches as a means to steal their land.

Ninety-two-year-old Margaret Kamango stands accused by her sons, while her strong-willed daughters try to protect her.

This dangerous dispute is seen through the eyes of Margaret’s grandson, Karisa, who returns home from the city to investigate and is ultimately forced to choose which side he is on.

Kenya Film Commission (KFC) is officially recognized by the Academy of Motion

Pictures Arts and Sciences (The Oscars) to set up an OSCARS Selection Committee from

Industry Associations and Guilds to make submissions for the Best International Feature Film Category Award (formerly known as the Best Foreign Language Film Category Award) on behalf

of the Kenyan film industry.

Only one film per country can qualify and a country needs not to submit a film every year.

If successful at the Academy stage, the film is then considered as NOMINATED and once a film is nominated, it is then eligible to compete for The Oscars.

Submission from Kenya is NOT equal to a Nomination.

This Submission of “The Letter” is only the first step in a series of stages that the movie has to undergo before being nominated.

The nominees for the 93rd Oscars Academy Awards will be announced by the Academy on 9th February 2021 ahead of the Oscars Academy Awards ceremony scheduled for 25th April 2021.
