Slain Rongo university student Sharon Otieno must be smiling from where she is after her family honoured her memory and that of her murdered child, a baby boy.
The boy who was fathered by Migori Governor Okoth Obado, was not buried without a name even if it died before it had reached it's full term.
The seven-month pregnant student had been raped and stabbed eight times: thrice in the neck, four times in the back and on the left side of her abdomen. The foetus was also doused in acid.
According to the postmortem report, the foetus’ death was caused by a knife stab from the back to the front, killing the baby in her womb
The child was laid to rest early last week at her grand parents home in Magare village, Homa Bay Town constituency, early last week.
Sharon’s mother Melida Auma said,
WE REALISED THE COST OF PRESERVING THE FOETUS IS HIGHER SO WE DECIDED TO BURY IT.
Anyhow, the burial followed the Luo traditional burial rites.
According to the Nairobian, the baby boy was given a name before being laid to a boy, the infant was named after the mother before being lowered into the grave.
Tears.
They honoured Sharon's memory by ensuring her brutal murder doesn't phase out the fact that she was killed together with her baby.
Also, Luo tradition necessitates that any human being be given a name before burial. This is because the dead can only be honoured and remembered through their named
"He is a baby boy and we have named him baby Sharon. Our reason for doing this is to abide by our culture which requires that any human being who gets out of the mother must have a name (sic)," said Samuel Odege, Sharon's grandfather told Nairobian.
The burial ceremony was sad with villagers mourning and getting overly emotional. The baby was laid to rest as the family awaits the completion of Sharon's murder case to bury her.
