An unmarried couple accused of being promiscuous had sewage water dumped on their heads as a humiliating punishment in Indonesia.

The young man and his girlfriend were accused of being alone together in a room despite being unwed – something forbidden by Sharia law.

They were dragged out in the street in the village of Kayee Lee in Aceh, on the island of Sumatra, on March 7 and forced in front of a sewer drain while waste was dumped on their heads, according to France24.

Footage of the public humiliation shows the man, dressed in a brown shirt and jeans, sitting in front of the drain with his head bowed.

Beside him, a young woman in a headscarf clutches a bag as the crowd heckles them both.

A man then dumps sewage waste on them both as some in the crowd shout: 'What you did is against Islam! This should serve as a lesson for you!'

According to France24, police arrived at the scene minutes later and took the couple to the police station – where the official morality police are based – after letting them clean up in a stream.

Ingin Jaya's chief of police Nazarul Fitra told local reporters that the 18-year-old girl had gone over to her boyfriend's house, who was at home alone.

Neighbours presumed they were there to have sex and forced them outside for the punishment.

Fitra said the morality police will conduct an investigation to determine if the crime of 'promiscuity' was committed – which is punishable with 100 lashes from a cane, a fine equivalent to 150g of gold or 15 months in prison.

Despite the existence of a morality police force, villagers often take it upon themselves to take matters into their hands.

A human rights activist in Aceh told France24: 'The people who humiliated the couple didn't get in trouble at all.

The police didn't criticise these people, even though they entered a private home illegally and humiliated the couple in public.'

Sharia law in Banda Aceh: Public lashings in Indonesia

Aceh is the only province in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, which implements Islamic law, or Sharia.

Last year, two gay men who admitted having sex were flogged in Aceh, with each receiving 100 strokes of the cane, drawing heavy criticism from rights groups.

Gay sex is not illegal in the rest of Indonesia, which mainly follows a criminal code inherited from former colonial ruler the Netherlands.

The province of Banda Aceh began implementing Sharia law after being granted autonomy in 2001 – an attempt by the government in Jakarta to quell a long-running separatist insurgency.

Islamic laws have been strengthened since Aceh struck a peace deal with Jakarta in 2005.

People are flogged for a range of offences including gambling, drinking alcohol, gay sex or any sexual relationship outside marriage.
