MANY people were left flabbergasted when music group Elani sensationally claimed that their first cheque from the Music Copyright Society of Kenya was a meager Sh31,000. This was at a time when the trio had a number of top-charting songs like Jana Usiku, ruling the airwaves.

Just when you thought that was way pretty little, you will fall off your hammock the moment you know how much Sauti Sol – arguably Kenya's best music outfit in the present times – received from MCSK as their first payment. By the time the trailblazing quartet received the SHOCKING numbers on their first cheque, songs like Soma Soma, Blue Uniform and Lazizi were on heavy rotation across the East African region.

“Our first payment from MCSK was a whooping Sh2,800! At the time, we were performing all over the country and had some of our biggest songs on constant rotation in the media, bars, mpaka kwa mathree... We were in utter shock! But we don't care. Hio pesa ya MCSK tutaiendea for our retirement,” says Bien.
