Sam West had a successful opening show last week of his aptly named Sam West Show. The show was a triumph for both fans and celebs alike. After this fact, we had to have a seat down with the comic and find out more about the man.
He was open, often breaking into humorous anecdotes about his life. He spoke about his journey from relative unknown to becoming the youngest radio station owner in the country. He said:
“When I came back from studying in Australia, I wanted to do something in media. I heard that a radio station was selling off its equipment in Nakuru and I bought it at a throwaway price of 150,000 shillings.”
Thing is he did not know that one needed numerous licenses to start a radio. He just anzad! The results were hilarious. He ended up getting a visit from the police who arrested him. They had come with 3 trucks like they were coming for a hardened criminal!
After he was able to get the licenses, all was well and the name of the radio station is called Hero Radio. After getting more successful in this area he decided to diversify and comedy was the area he was drawn to. That is why he started the show.
“The Sam West Show is an avenue to highlight different talents in this country. The comedy is done in the English language. The reason for this is to make sure our comedy can sell internationally and Kiswahili would limit us.”
The show was received well but one thing that was an oddity for him was the number of people who paid for tickets and didn’t come for the show. He wondered aloud:
“Yaani many people paid for the show but did not come for the show. Hapo sielewi.”
Let us hope that we see more of this enterprising man on our screens.
