A woman was raped by a man she met on  after she bumped into him by chance at a gathering.

The victim reluctantly let Joao Neto, 28, sleep on her sofa when her partner suggested he stay over on February 12, 2017.

Neto made his way up to her bedroom in the night and raped her, despite her desperate attempts to wake the man she was romantically linked with, the  reported.

When she tried to stir her partner, who was sleeping next to her, he laughed, kissed her and fell back to sleep.

Neto dragged his victim to another bedroom and proceeded to rape her, pinning her down so she couldn't escape and covering her nose and mouth so she couldn't scream.

He also slapped his victim during the attack, the court heard.

After the attack, Neto told his victim that their encounter 'started bad but ended good'.

He was found guilty of four counts of sexual intercourse without consent, and one count of common assault on September 13 of this year.

Neto's girlfriend was present in court when the sentence was given.

In a victim impact statement read out in court, Neto's victim described how she had no idea how much a rape could break a person and her life is now 'changed, cautious and closed.'
