A university student and his grandmother were among the fatalities of tragic accident that occurred along Kisii-Nyatieko road on Sunday.

Jared Mogire – who was set to graduate graduate from Kisii University in December – was riding on a motorcycle with his grandmother when a lorry that had lost control hit them.

Nyangaresi and his grandmother Wilkister Moraa were reportedly coming from Nyambera Catholic Church – where they had attended mass – when they met their deaths.

A third person identified as Henry Nyabuto who was with them at the time of the incident also lost his life. Sources say he hailed from Bouti Village and worked at St. Judes jua kali.

Four other people who sustained injuries during the accident were taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Eyewitnesses said they heard the lorry hooting before it overturned on the opposite side of the road.

Speaking to journalists, Susan Kemuto – a fuel attendant at a nearby station – said the lorry was on high speed before it hit the motorcycle.

“The vehicle was on high speed and we sensed danger. It rammed into the first motorbike dragging for almost ten meters all the two people who were riding on the motorbike. The second rider stopped to give way to the lorry but the vehicle hit them from the side,” she said.

Kisii Traffic Commandant Eric Kithinji has said that that the police will carry out further investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
