A Kirinyaga University student has committed suicide inside a hostel within the institution for unknown reasons.

The first-year engineering student was reported to have, locked himself into the hostel cubical at about 9 pm Friday night.

When his cubical mates wanted to retire for the night, they allegedly found the door locked from inside and on knocking several times there was no response.

The frustrated roommates then reported the matter to the university security team who rushed to the hostel and broke the door, only to find the student’s body dangling from the roof.

Police from the nearby Kutus police station rushed to the institution and removed the body to the mortuary awaiting a post mortem.

The student who was only admitted to the university last month was said to have been suffering from serious stress over unpaid fees among other problems.

He is said to have hailed from a poor family which could not pay his first-semester fee after which the university administration wanted to send him packing.

It was further established that about 200 other students have since been expelled from the college for non-payment of fees while several others are also awaiting the same fate.

Meanwhile, the university has had frosty relations with the media since the current leadership headed by Prof. Wambui Ndungu took over about 3 years ago.

The relationship worsened soon after curios journalist tried to find out why some 45 students ranging from first-years to finalists had been given a four-year suspension by the university administration.

However, learning at the institution continues as usual as students were seen streaming in and out of the institution Saturday.
