There is nothing more painful for a parent than loosing not one, but two sons to drugs. A father narrates how his wealth and privilege could not save his two sons.

British Aristocrat Nicholas Monson lost his younger son, Rupert, to drug-induced psychosis three weeks ago leaving him to deal with the devastating deaths of two children.

Monson’s elder son, Alexander, died at the age of 28 while in police custody in Kenya in 2012 after being arrested on suspicion of smoking cannabis. He has since spent five years attempting to prove that his son was battered to death by a police officer, while the authorities have repeatedly blamed Alexander’s death on a drug overdose. His inquest is expected to be concluded in the next eight weeks.

Speaking to Times UK, he said,

“Having two inquests going on, one in Mombasa and one in Guildford, is like being at the epicentre of a tragi-comedy. I feel as though I’m outside the situation, flying away from myself, going upwards and looking back and thinking: ‘This is all very strange, it can’t be real.’ I suppose in a sense that’s a protective mechanism.”

Mansoon has how channeled his energy into a personal crusade against skunk, the highly potent form of cannabis that Monson claims caused the psychosis that drove Rupert to take his life.

Times reports  that in the 18 months during which the family believes Rupert had been using the drug, he went from “a brilliant, artistic, athletic boy — one of the fastest bowlers of his generation — to a changed person inhabiting a nightmare”. Monson recalls: “When they pulled his life-support machine, the doctor said resignedly, ‘Yet another victim of skunk.’ ”

Monsoon told Times, “Towards the end of his life, I asked Rupert why he had thrown so much away,” he says, as we sit near a stream fed by a natural spring, the lawns sloping off towards woodland.

“He told me he felt guilty that he had everything and that he didn’t deserve it. I realised for the second time that all the privilege and wealth in the world does not protect your child at all.”
