An assistant hotel manager has died in Mumias after falling from the third floor of his hotel’s balcony.

Harrison Katana, 44, was found dead at 1am on Tuesday near the resort’s swimming pool.

Colleagues and those who spent the day with him on Monday say he spent the day at the resort and worked until late in the evening.

Katana took drinks at the hotel then left for a nearby Bama Pub. He is said to have continued drinking until 11pm, then he took a motorcycle back to the resort where he lives.

Resort owner Charles Mana said he arrived at the resort late from Kitale, when most staffers were asleep. As he was watching the news, he heard a loud bang outside. Mana went to investigate and found Katana’s body.

Witnesses said Katana entered his room on the third floor and locked himself in, which they found unusual.

Mana said, “Most of my employees here usually leave their doors open.”

It is not yet clear if it was suicide or an accident due to drunkenness.

Mana and the resort’s employees said Katana was jovial all day and there was nothing unusual in his behaviour.

Mumias police boss Peter Kattam said, “We haven’t established what might have caused the death, but currently we are not treating [it as] foul play but an accident.”
