The heavy rains were predicted in many parts of Kenya yesterday pummelled the neighbourhood of Ruaka. The region which is in Kiambu county is very hilly and that can result in landslides when it pours heavily.
This fate has now affected the town which has a lot of developments springing up on a seemingly daily basis. One Twitter user called Mister Oyugi wrote about a landslide that had occurred on Lane 26 on the outskirts of the town. He wrote:
Meanwhile, A neighbour in Ruaka who is building dug his foundation too deep and the wall bordering his construction site collapsed due to heavy rains last night.now the whole building neighbouring the site might be going down soon. see those columns.
Some responses to his post are below:
Mathini michael: The building was structurally sound. The problem is the issuance of permits to unqualified deep excavators.1. They did not retain the wall,2.failed to decrease the influence of creep. 3.Ground improvement.
Mutindi Mutua: Emm, I feel for Ruaka home owners. Why does the government approving authority not have a conscience. Dont they realise they out families in danger? My heart bleeds for Kenya. #RuakaLivesMatter
Muchiri D: Basic Health and Safety Issues which as a country we do not adhere to. We have no standards whatsoever in anything.
KK: The wife of the guy who’s car is in the ditch has been praying
M★a★r★i★E 🇰🇪: Proof that me moving out of Ruaka was a wise decision.
#BeHumble@ranchoYuleMdark: Yeah just suspected its that area..the muhindi contractor is trying to seal up the area isionekane
