Africa continues to mourn the death of Zimbabwe’s founding father Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe was the only leader his country had known since independence in 1980 until 2017, when he was forced by his political party ZANU -PF to step down.
Mugabe died on Friday morning at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore and his successor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa was the first to announce his death.
It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Comrade Robert Mugabe,” he tweeted.
Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten.May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Mugabe has left behind a widow Grace with four children. But did you know that Mugabe had another wife before Grace?
Well, her name was Sally Francesca Hayfron, a Ghanaian. She was born in 1931, in a political family in Ghana.
She met her future husband, Robert Mugabe, in the Gold Coast at Takoradi Teacher Training College where they were both teaching, and went with him to Southern Rhodesia, where they were married in April 1961 in Salisbury.
Sally died on January 27, 1992 aged 60 in Harare, Zimbabwe after a kidney failure. She and Mugabe had one child named Nhamodzenyika, who succumbed to Malaria.
Their child was born in 1963 when Mugabe was in detention and imprisoned. He was prevented from attending the burial of his son.
He later married “Gucci” Grace in 1996 and they had three children together and the fourth child is from her previous relationship.
In 1998 he said the reason why he married Grace.
I wanted children and this is how I thought I could get them. I knew what I was doing and my wife knew.’ he said.
