A northern white rhino has died in San Diego bringing the rare species close to extinction. There are only five left in the whole world – which means that our grandchildren may only be seeing them in pictures; we'll be telling them stories of how the animal looked like. They won't get the difference between the times dinosaurs and the white rhinos existed because it'll be all a fairytale-esque narration.

The rhino died of old age but poaching is highly credited to bringing the numbers of the species down. Africa and Asia had a population of more than 500,000 rhinos at the beginning of the twentieth century but the species has been pushed closer and closer to extinction by being killed for its horns.

“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you that Angalifu passed away today. He was 44 years old and under veterinary care for geriatric conditions for some time. With Angalifu's passing, only 5 northern white rhinos are left on the planet, including Nola, our elderly female. The loss of this animal is a tragedy, so we ask you to share condolences with our staff,” San Diego Zoo Safari Park said in a statement earlier today.
