One year after sustaining injuries in a road accident, Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju has narrated the ordeal, terming it as the most painful moment of his life.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Tuju said that he was deep asleep when his vehicle was involved in a head on collision along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The accident victims were rushed to Kijabe Hospital and even though the former minister had an opportunity to be airlifted to Nairobi, his condition could not allow this.

"Calls were made and a helicopter was sent from Wilson Airport to pick me. But I was bleeding profusely, doctors said I couldn't make it to Nairobi, chopper or no chopper," Tuju narrated.

After his health improved, Tuju had to be trained to start making few steps with a walking aid.

"The only worry was, will I be able to walk again? The biggest celebration is that I'm able to walk now."

Tuju said it was the most painful moment of his life as 18 bones in his body broke. The breakage affected his 13 ribs, 3 on the chest and 2 on the right leg.

"One rib pierced my right lung, and it was very painful but they could do nothing about it. So, with one lung collapsing there was this nurse at Kijabe who boarded the aircraft and helped me to breathe by pumping oxygen using a valve," he said.

After the horrific accident, Tuju has embarked on a 50 Kilometre walk to raise money for purchasing medical equipment for the Kijabe mission hospital.

On the fateful day, he was heading to the burial of late President Daniel Moi when his car collided with a Matatu heading to Nairobi.
