Random thoughts: 10 of the most basic Nairobian meals ever

Besides drinking, Nairobians have very predictable meal habits. The following are the meals that every Nairobian has had this festive season

  1. Ugali, sukuma na beef. This is also referred to as Number 1. I can bet you that 60% of Nairobians will have this for dinner with avocado or a banana. This is such a simple meal and oh, the Nyama is cooked with Royco
  2. Chips, sausage and Fanta. All Nairobians grew up having this as their fantasy meal, Yes, this explains why after all these years you still choose to take fanta as your preferred hangover cure or why you refer to as all soda as Fanta. “Uko na Fanta” is the most said statement at a soda wholesale depot
  3. Ugali, Nyama choma and Kachumbari. We have to thank whoever discovered this meal combination for creating something special. Its not a Kenyan party without nyama choma. Which Nairobian hasn’t gone to Kenyatta market for Nyama Choma?
  4. Tuesday pizza. I suspect that the only reason Nairobians love Tuesday pizza is because we love free stuff. It has nothing to do with the quality of the pizza. If there was a free underwear offer, Nairobians would flock in the same way
  5. Mayai Pasua. Mayai with Kachumbari is the best post-disco meal ever. A typical sober Nairobian would be like “I cant be seen eating eggs in public” ...but just get him a little bit tipsy and you will see his true colours. “Ati ulisema mayai tatu ni pesa ngapi?”
  6. Mutura. The only person Nairobian men are more loyal to than their barber is the local mutura guy. Mutura looks awful until you taste it. In fact, Mutura has become as habitual as taking a shower. Once you go mutura, you don’t go back. It deserves multiple awards. Like the githeri man, we deserve mutura man.
  7. Sonford fries and Kuku sama. Who hasn’t ever gone to Sonford? There are no fries like Sonford fries. In fact, no matter how successful a Nairobian will get, he/she will never stop going to Sonford. Those are the best fries ever!
  8. Chapati and beans. The number one kibanda meal is not complete without tea or what is commonly known at the local Kibanda as chai choma. Yes. This is such a dope meal except for the farts it tends to encourage.
  9. Smokie Pasua. A very similar delicacy to mayai pasua
  10. Galitos two piecer. This is the most convenient meal for any occasion. When you are randomly hungry, when from the club, for a cheap date, when you don’t know what to order. You can never go wrong with a Galitos two piecer
