Burundi's first lady Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza was late month airlifted to Nairobi for treatment after she contracted COVID-19.

She is currently hospitalized at Aga Khan hospital in Nairobi. She was airlifted to Nairobi on May 28, 2020 accompanied by three security personnel.

The news of the sudden death of her husband President Pierre Nkurunziza finds her still hospitalized miles away from her home.

The Burundi government has confirmed that President Nkurunziza, aged 55, died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

According to a press statement, he was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, his condition improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

He leaves behind his wife and 5 children.
