The pick of matches from this weekend’s  action sees Manchester United and Liverpool renew their famous rivalry with a clash at Old Trafford on Sunday 2 May.

While United look set to finish comfortably inside the top four – likely second behind runaway leaders Manchester City – Liverpool, last season’s title winners, are scrapping for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League and will be desperate for all three points from their trip to ‘The Theatre of Dreams’.

“We will only know at the end how many points we will need to make it [finishing in the top four] happen, but as I have said before, we should not waste time or points and really go for it. That is the situation we are in,” said Red manager Jurgen Klopp.

“Of course, third last year, second this year if that’s what we manage and close to a trophy, it’s progress,” said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of this season’s work. “That’s not the end game. The end game is, of course, winning the league. But we’re not in the era of Sir Alex now.”

The battle for the top extends past the huge clash at Old Trafford, with key matches for Leicester City, West Ham United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur this coming weekend. The Foxes head to St Mary’s looking to rekindle memories of their stunning 9-0 win over Southampton from the 2019-20 season; Thomas Tuchel’s Blues face close neighbours Fulham at Stamford Bridge for a London derby; the Hammers face Burnley in an all claret and blue clash; and Spurs will need to claim all three points against already-relegated Sheffield United.

Another intriguing clash sees Newcastle United host Arsenal at St James Park, with the Magpies enjoying a recent upturn in form which has seen them ease fears of being drawn into the relegation battle. Manager Steve Bruce is hopeful his club can keep Gunners’ starlet Joe Willock, who has been on loan in the North-East since January this year.

“We would love to keep him here. He is the type of player you’d love to build your club around. Whether we can or not I’m not quite sure,” said Bruce, who will be hoping for a positive result to add to their growing confidence.

is the only place to get English commentary from the legendary , where the pick of matches for this round sees Valencia host Barcelona on the evening of Sunday 2 May. With Barca in the midst of a tough title battle with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, they will need all three points from their trip to Estadio de Mestalla.

“We will fight for La Liga until the last game,” said Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman. We have made changes to the team this year, but the players have delivered.”

Valencia, meanwhile, have struggled to find form through 2020-21 and will not compete in Europe next season – a failure which is set to see a change of management, with Javi Gracia likely to be shown the door at the end of the season.

The weekend’s action also sees a relegation six-pointer between Eibar and Deportivo Alaves from Estadio Municipal de Ipurua on Saturday afternoon, while title hopefuls Atletico and Real will be in action late the same day.

The Rojiblancos head to Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero to face relegation-threatened Elche, while Los Blancos will welcome Osasuna to Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

“We have maintained a firm and strong step this season as both Madrid and Barcelona have begun to recover so we will wait and see,” said Atletico manager Diego Simeone, while Real boss Zinedine Zidane has praised his team’s resilience.

“We’re all together and the team is always there and wants more. We haven’t won anything,” said the Frenchman.

Another tasty clash on the menu is the round-closing battle between Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao on the evening of Monday 3 May, with the former looking to confirm a top-four finish and the latter hoping for a strong end to what has been an otherwise disappointing campaign – underlined by a heavy loss to Barcelona in the recent Copa del Rey final.

“The important thing is to make sure we qualify for the Champions League again,” said Sevilla’s Suso, who has become a key man for Los Nervionenses under manager Julen Lopetegui.

The headline fixture from  this weekend sees Sassuolo host Atalanta at the MAPEI Stadium on the afternoon of Sunday 2 May. La Dea have completely dominated this rivalry in recent years, racking up eight straight wins over the Neroverdi dating back to 2017 and scoring no less than 29 goals in the process.

One of the stars of Atalanta’s rise has been wingback Robin Gosens, who admits that he struggled to fit in during his early days at the club: My first year in Bergamo was full of disappointments and insecurity. I had arrived in a new country and I didn’t speak the language. There was no one to help me.”

The German added, “I knew the hard work would pay off someday. I started to have more playing time, I felt better with the team and I became more and more important to them, month after month, season after season. Now, after four years here in Bergamo, I have become an important player of the team. I played in the Champions League and joined the German national team.”

The weekend also features a ‘black and white’ derby between Udinese and Juventus from the Dacia Arena, with the visitors from Turin under pressure to claim the three points as they fight for a place in the top four. One of the Bianconeri’s stars, Paulo Dybala, has come under fire from former Italy striker Luca Toni, who claims the Argentine “has a great potential, but he has never shown that he is the leader of Juventus”.

Internazionale will be clear favourites for three points when they visit Crotone, while Milan will feel the same way about their home clash against Benevento, with Rafael Leao insisting that the Rossoneri must secure a top-four finish.

“We’re moving into the final weeks of the season and must do everything to help our team finish in the Champions League places,” said the young Portuguese forward. “Milan is a big club and deserves to be in the Champions League.”
