It was last night when Kiss 100 reporter Stephen Letoo was heading home. He boarded a taxi, not knowing that the driver was a robber posing as a taxi operator.

"They pretend to be the cheapest first...they have very clean and new cars....they usually park in front of clubs...

they robbed me along the way but still drove me to my house and told me not to say anything," he said.

In a Facebook status expressing his shock and distaste for the incident, the newsman says that the robbers made away with a cash amount of Ksh. 35,000 shillings among other belongings.

"Guys Beware>>> Last night i was robbed 35,000 Shillings by a ‪#‎Taxi‬ operator i had paid to drive me home (Kasarani) just after the rains in Nairobi's CBD. In the same robbery, i lost my National ID Card, Press Card and my KCB ATM Card.

I have reported the incident to Kasarani Police Station and left the matter for the police to investigate.

Cases of fake taxi operators in Nairobi have been on the rise. My advise: always use a yellow-lined taxi," the angered, frustrated reporter said.

This is a shocking trend. Taxis are being used to con people as well. These "drivers" stop by at drive through food outlets or roadside kiosks with fake money and pretend to be in a hurry. When they get change from the sellers, they speed off, much to the disappointment of business owners.

Here's the police report filed after the case:
