Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has complained about ongoing harassment by the country’s security officers even after allegedly being injured on Tuesday.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) claimed that some officers followed him to the hospital where he was admitted, causing disruption for the doctors while demanding his medical records.

He also alleged that the officers sent by the government attempted to enter his hospital room to harass him before being stopped by some of his supporters.

"As if that wasn't enough, they also blocked all roads leading to the hospital, causing a traffic jam and endangering more lives," Bobi Wine said on his Twitter page.

The singer-turned-politician revealed that he decided to continue his treatment at home after undergoing minor surgery on his leg following the injury he sustained on Tuesday.

He explained that his decision to return home was further influenced by security concerns at the hospital and the condition of other patients admitted there.

“I will receive the remaining treatment from home. Many thanks to all who continue to send messages of goodwill and comfort. We will talk soon,” he said.

Earlier, the Uganda Police Force on Tuesday evening expressed doubts about the claims of Bobi Wine being shot.

Bobi Wine’s aide, Najja Ssenyonj, had earlier in the evening raised claims that the opposition leader was injured in the leg during a confrontation with a police officer in uniform.

In a public statement, however, the Uganda Police Force disagreed with these claims, suggesting that the former singer was injured after stumbling while getting into his vehicle.

This was according to reports from officers present during the altercation between Bobi Wine and the officers.

“On September 3, 2024, Mr. Kyagulanyi Robert was invited by Mr. George Musisi (Lawyer) for a thanksgiving event in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District. Mr. Kyagulanyi attended the event, which concluded peacefully,” the Uganda Police statement read.

“When Mr. Kyagulanyi left the venue, he and his team exited their vehicles and began a procession towards Bulindo town; however, the police advised against it. Despite their guidance, he insisted on continuing and blocking roads, leading to police intervention to stop the procession. During the ensuing scuffle, he is said to have sustained injuries.

Police officers at the scene claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Mr. Kyagulanyi and his team allege he was shot,” the statement continued.

The police department said an investigation is ongoing to determine the truth behind the conflicting claims from both sides.
