The extravagant spending by politicians on their outfits has sparked a national debate. From expensive watches to belts and shoes, Kenyans have been left stunned.

Citizens are particularly concerned about this display of opulence amid the rising cost of living, which has prompted protests and calls for accountability.

Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya took to social media to share how relatively inexpensive his outfits are compared to his peers.

In a video recorded in his office, the Governor explained that his watch costs Sh3,000 and was a gift from a friend.

He defended its cost, saying, "It ranges from 3,000 to 6,000. I checked online because it was given to me by a friend." He then showed his hand chain inscribed with his name, which cost Sh2,000.

The politician lifted his leg to display dark brown formal shoes, saying, "Hii ni elfu nne na mia tano." His jeans, he noted, were also affordable, costing Sh2,000, and his shirt was similarly inexpensive. "So it's about maybe 10-12k," he summarized.

Someone in the background commented, "Na we ni governor!"

"Sinidyo, mimi ni Governor. Mavazi ni mavazi tu. Ukienda kwa street ya Nairobi, yule mtu ambaye ametoka Muthaiga, Karen, na yule ametoka Kibra, ametoka Korogocho, vile wamevaa, unaweza jua mavazi imetoka wapi?" Natembeya responded, emphasizing that clothes are just clothes and don’t have to be expensive.

He humorously mocked a peer, referring to a fired CS with an expensive watch who "could not read his time was up."

"So it's the purpose, sio ati ikuwe expensive," he concluded.
