Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday admitted that he has not been a teetotaler throughout his life and that he used to abuse alcohol before.

The DP, however, said he has since quit drinking after encountering the 'Jesus Christ' and became a born-again Christian.

The President, [Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure] Kindiki, and the rest of us, none has a problem with alcohol. I must admit I used to drink a lot before I got saved,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua, who is leading the government's ruthless war against illicit brews, said his life has since quitting alcohol changed for the better.

Gachagua challenged those abusing alcohol to take up the challenge and quit drinking.

“That is how I am deputy president. I invite those who drink to consider dropping it and maybe things will get better,'' he said.

Gachagua used a conference on the fight against illicit brew in Nakuru to put on notice government officers condoning the alcohol menace through corruption.

“We are very happy with police officers who are doing a very good job but we have a serious problem with a few of them who have a conflict of interest and have opened bars in the areas where they serve.

We have a problem with a few officers who are collecting protection fees; police officers who are supposed to arrest drunkards but they are more drunk,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua has become the face of the Kenya Kwanza government's war against illicit brews.
