Comedian MC Jessy has defended his decision to contest as an independent candidate in the South Imenti Parliamentary seat after being denied a ticket by William Ruto's UDA party.

Speaking on Citizen TV, MC Jessy dismissed an announcement made on DP William Ruto's social media that he had agreed to step down in favour of his opponent Mwiti Kathaara.

"Whatever happened there is not something I can talk much about because the DP is still my good friend. He asked me to remain with him in the presidential team. But I had spoken to my people at home I told them the DP wanted us to talk, and not to step down," he said.

Jessy added that he did not accept to step down as communicated in the tweet, and nor did he visit William Ruto's home for such talks.

"I was called for talks and not to step down. I did not accept to step down, I did not want us to do that. We talked and the DP asked me(to step down) later I told him that Imenti residents did not ask me to step down. I told him if that is the case we should go for nominations," Jessy added.

The comedian was particular that he did not agree to shelve his ambitions, and regretted holding the talks.

"What I did wrong was accepting to talk. We did not agree."

Earlier, DP Ruto had announced that he held talks with Jessy, where he accepted to postpone his parliamentary bid and take up a position in his presidential campaigns secretariat.

"MC Jessy (Jasper Muthomi) will join the presidential campaign team after postponing his parliamentary bid in favour of Mwiti Kathaara for the South Imenti Seat," Ruto wrote in a tweet.

Days after the announcement, Jessy declared that he will contest for the MP seat as an independent candidate.
