March 17, 2022 marks one year since the demise of the late Tanzania  President John Pombe Magufuli. 

His death was announced on March 18, with the Tanzanian government saying he succumbed to heart complications. 

However, preliminary reports indicated that president Magufuli succumbed to Covid-19 complications. 

A year on, his predecessor Samia Suluhu commemorated the late President, asking Tanzanians to keep his legacy. 

"Umetimia mwaka mmoja tangu kuondokewa na aliyekuwa Rais wetu wa Awamu ya Tano, Hayati Dkt. John Magufuli. Namshukuru Mwenyezi Mungu nchi yetu ipo imara na kazi inaendelea. Tuendelee kumuenzi kwa kuyaishi mema aliyoyatenda kwa nchi yetu na tumuombee aendelee kupumzika kwa amani.

(It is one year since the death of our 5th President Dr John Magufuli. I thank God our nation is strong and work is in progress. Let us continue to honour him for the good he did for our nation and pray for him to continue resting in peace.)," she wrote.

President Samia was sworn in days after the death of Magufuli, and became the first female president in Tanzania.
