The daughter of former Mt Elgon MP John Serut has mourned his passing.

According to the daughter, Michelle Serut, the politician had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2020, and it had taken a financial toll on the family.

"Hey guys, so a lot of you don’t know me but I’m here requesting your help today. My father’s name is John Serut and he’s been unwell for a while now. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2020. Since then, we’ve had medical bills totaling to about 20 million," Michelle said.

Serut died at a Nairobi hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Mourning his passing, she said, "Rest in peace to the love of my life. I hate that you won't get to see the woman I become but I'll make you proud. I love you, dad."

His death was confirmed by the daughter on Wednesday, 16.

Politicians sent in their condolences.

Deputy President William Ruto remembered Serut as a gifted debater, persistent, and a fighter for equal justice.

"He was a gifted debater, persistent, and a fighter for equal justice. We honor the rich legacy that he leaves behind," Ruto tweeted.

Adding, "Mheshimiwa John Serut was a firm, bold and vocal politician who served the people of Mt Elgon with distinction.  We honour the rich legacy that he leaves behind."
