CS Raphael Tuju recently lost his mother Mary Odiyo Tuju, who succumbed to complications from old age.

Mary Odiyo was however not the biological mother of Tuju, but rather a stepmother that he bonded with through breastfeeding.

In an interview with the Nation, Tuju told how he ended up suckling from his stepmother while his biological mum was still alive.

"My step-mother, I mean, Mama's co-wife breastfed me. It happened that my mother became unwell for some time. Her co-wife had unfortunately lost a baby and that meant she still had milk in her breasts. She agreed to feed me for some time," he said.

The bond that was created between Tuju and his step-mum during the breastfeeding remained strong.

He says Mama Mary introduced him to the Anglican church, hoping that he would become a servant of God.

When Tuju's mother died on November 18, President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned her as a highly-respected community leader.

"Her belief that education was the foundation of life was the inspiration that led many from her community to pursue education, and become productive members of society,” the President stated.
