Disturbing footage has emerged of a police officer allegedly groping an unsuspecting young woman at a train station in India while pretending to be asleep.

Passengers caught the Railway Protection Force (RPF) officer apparently fondling the oblivious stranger as she sat beside him tending to a small child with her back turned.

An eagle-eyed witness alerted commuters after he filmed the constable covering his eyes with one hand while creeping along the woman's back with the other and reaching for her arm.

A man leapt from his seat and slapped the officer in the face, while another woman was seen pushing him away from the platform as he pleaded in vain with the angry crowd.

The RPF immediately suspended the constable - named in reports as Rajesh Jahangir - and ordered an internal inquiry following the incident at Kalyan railway station, near Mumbai, on Monday evening, according to The Times of India.

Footage of the incident was shared on social media and viewed tens of thousands of times.

It appears to show the uniformed officer resting his head in his right hand while letting his left hand slowly drift along the woman's back.

He glances up at her for a few moments then resumes his sleeping pose as he glides his fingers towards her arm while she is distracted.

The person filming raises the alarm, prompting the man sitting next to the officer to spring up and start slapping him.

The officer shields his face then quickly gathers his belongings and stands up, holding his hands out to calm the mob.

But they will not be silenced and continue to berate him as he hurries from the platform, pursued by a woman who appears to shove him towards the tracks.

Senior officials said the constable has been with the RPF for 11 years but is likely to be removed from service based on the video evidence, reports The Hindu.

Sachin Bhalode, senior divisional security commissioner of Central Railway, told the newspaper: 'We became aware of the incident on Wednesday morning. The constable was questioned by his seniors and suspended.'
