44 passengers narrowly escaped death after a matatu they boarded was swept by waters of River Kyamela along Emaili - Ukia Road.

The matatu was ferrying 40 university students and 4 staff from Lukenya university to Nairobi.

The vehicle had diverted from Mombasa - Nairobi Highway avoiding a snarl-up following an accident.

Makueni county police commander Joseph Napeiyan says all passengers are safe.

The Matatu is still in the water.
