A man who was arraigned before a Kakamega court shocked the bench after demanding to be addressed in no other language but British English.

The man, Edwin Lihanga, reportedly stole gumboots worth Sh500 at Kakamega Sports Club on November 11, 2016 at around 5pm.

When he was asked which language he prefers the charges to be read in, the man said that he only understands British English and left the bench dumbfounded.

Lihanga also told the court that he intended to return the gumboots to the owner who goes by the name Obed Makanji and only walked away after realizing that he was not around.

The judge directed that a social evaluation and a mental check be done on him before he determines his next course of action.
