Willy Paul and Kenyan artistes are not yet done with MCSK after paying them peanuts.
The war seems to have just started and things might take an ugly turn if artistes storm the MCSK offices as many have threatened to.
Willy Paul, Khaligraph Jones, King Kaka among other artistes have put the Music Copyright Society of Kenya on the spot over poor royalty payments.
THIS TIME HATUWAACHI. YOU MUST GIVE US OUR MONEY!!! WE DONT WORK SO HARD YOU PEOPLE, POCKET OUR MONEY. NAONA WATU WANANUNUA MAGARI WANAENDESHA BALLS NA OVARIES ZAO HAPA!! GIVE US OUR MONEY
ITS TIME FOR SOME RESPECT!!! WE HAVE FAMILIES THAT ARE LOOKING UP TO US,’ Willy Paul said in an angry rant.
MCSK later revealed why they paid artistes poorly.
We have distributed royalties to all our members (13,967) general distribution. It’s PPP distribution (Performance in Public Places) these are collections from public places for only 2 months. Please note that we haven’t received a dime from any broadcasters who exploit music,’ read a tweet on MCSK’s page.
Another tweet by MCSK read,
We made a general distribution because if we strictly followed scientific distribution then 70% of the money collected will be paid to the international societies. We all know that Kenyan music receives little airplay. The figures you’d receive would be less.
Willy Paul went ahead to rant calling upon DCI to take action against the music body.
KENYAN MUSICIANS NEEDyourR HELP DCI!!! We tried fighting this thing from within. Nonini resigned from Directorship at PRISK juu watu lazima wakule na hawataki ‘new age solutions’ like digital monitoring. No accountability, transparency and blatant disregard of the law is the order of the day. Joint collection has been a fight. Fellow artists I know who are fighting the good fight in there where it matters (boardrooms et al have received all sorts of threats including death) the force is bigger than meets the eye. Kuna ma ‘biggie’ wanakula pesa ya wasanii bila uoga. If broadcasters complied today there would be chaos because the same culprits keep rotating amongst these CMO’s leadership… 4B is roughly the figure the broadcasters are holding annually. 700M is what we are seeing floating around now. There is almost 1B unaccounted for. Surely DCI should be in these offices right now. Something has to give. We did it with #PlayKeMusic switch up to both #PlayKeMusic and #PayForKeMusic do not relent.
The Jigi Jigi hitmaker told off the bodies controlling the artistes royalties, warning them.
This is a very big warning to MCSK, KAMP and PRISK. The money you sent us (artistes) is it for airtime or what? Nyambeni huko.
