The only country in Africa that can compete with Kenya corruption-wise are the Nigerians. They take the corruption to a level that can make even the Kenyans who steal public money in gunias blush.
For a country that has some of the biggest reserves of oil in Africa, with revenues reaching 100 billion dollars a year, Nigeria is a study in corruption and crazy embezzling by government officials.
But what has made me write about the Nigerians? The excuse the Joints Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) came up with when auditors wanted to find out where 10 million shillings or 36 million Naira had vanished to, the answer they got was ridiculous to say the least.
An accounts clerk from the agency allegedly claimed that a snake had swallowed Sh10 million and disappeared without a trace. Hehehe! Yes, a snake swallowed all of it in cash!
According to Nigerian press, Ms. Philomena Chieshe made the bizarre revelation while responding to an audit query at the JAMB offices in Makurdi, Benue State.
Chieshe claimed that the snake ‘spiritually’siphoned the millions that was kept in an office vault. The auditors knew that their collective legs were being pulled and they decided to institute disciplinary proceedings against her.
After news of the snake broke, Nigerians flooded their social media pages to ridicule and castigate the manner in which embezzlement was milking their public coffers dry. Examples of some of their reactions:
JAMB is a state agency responsible for the registration of admission of individuals seeking to join various universities in the country.
