Kenyan soldiers have been in neighbouring Somalia since 2011 on a mission to get rid of militant and terrorist group al Shabaab. They were integrated into the African Union Mission to Somalia (Amisom), a peacekeeping force, in 2012. Over the years, the Kenya Defence Forces has lost many gallant soldiers to the terrorist group, as a result of the heavy fighting in the Horn of Africa.

Many more have been maimed, while others have been captured and become prisoners of war in the hands of al Shabaab. There have been numerous calls from different quarters in Kenya to recall the soldiers back to the country.

However, the government has kept a firm stand that our soldiers will only return after their work in Somalia (to completely defeat al Shabaab) is done. The KDF men were sent to Somalia during retired President Mwai Kibaki's tenure, under the operational banner, Operation Linda Nchi.

Now, a video allegedly shot by the terror group purportedly of a Kenyan soldier who was captured at war with al Shabaab early this year, has surfaced online. The soldier, identified from the video as David Ngugi Wataari, is heard pleading with President Uhuru Kenyatta to "rethink" about KDF's stay in the war-torn nation.

Wataari, who first expresses his love for his wife and child, and also for his nuclear family, also pleads with the President to find ways to save him and other soldiers captured by the militants.
