Videos of anti-riot police assaulting and beating University of Nairobi students using batons, whips and kicks at their halls of residence have gone viral igniting mixed reactions on social media.

This happened moments after they had protested the arrest of former SONU chairman now Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Many have condemned the brutal act calling upon Inspector General (IG) Boinnet to take action against the officers who were involved. Multi-skilled NTV reporter Ken Mijungu has threatened to resign if Mr. Boinnet doesn't take any action about the matter.

"As a Kenyan citizen, I am taking a moral high ground on police brutality. After watching several of the videos especially of the police tear gassing students in their hostel, I am asking the IG Boinnet to take action on the police within 7 days, arrest and prosecute. If he doesn’t I will resign. There is no moral obligation to continue reporting on the same thing time and again without translating to something. It’s useless and frustrating," he posted on FACEBOOK.

Reactions include;

Migwi Sam Mwangi: This sounds BOLD but hey... Don't be so tough on yourself bro. There's always a story behind a story. Unearth it before you decide to exit. The revelations.

Victor Oluoch: ...and how is your resignation going to affect the IG, or even his Police force? You should do things, like walk naked, or starve to death ..or something along that line.

Bob Annon:  You don't have to resign. Just push the IG to do his part.

Grace Kiongera: Please don't resign. We need more objective, issue-based reporting. There must be something you can do from there. Moha had Jicho Pevu, you can have your own platform. Your resignation will not solve the problem

JayJay: You are an employee of Nation Group not a policeman or a civil servant. how will your resignation be effective with regard to the good concern you are raising. I think what you should do is to dig deeper, unmask their faces, names & the station they are from

Patrick Mukora: Before you resign please do a feature on someone who has been caught up in one of those university protests ...... more if they were harassed, beaten up or robbed by the protesting students ...

Vionne Umutesi: Why are people castigating him?

If you are doing a particular job, you need to go back home feeling fulfilled. Probably he doesn't!! His conscience is not at peace.

Benconix Odhiambo: Don't resign but use your position to push for change

Amara Gibbs: My brother Ken Mijungu if you plan to resign do it right away. IG Boinett has just said he confident 100% those people police were beating were thugs hiding in the university residence and he is very happy they used modest tools given to them by "constitution on baby Pendo and Samantha"

Dan: Outside media houses, we have made gains because some people have continued with the struggle for over 20 years.
