Confusion is rife after the Education Ministry supposedly extended the school opening dates in a message late at night.

The ministry on its Twitter account at 1.20 am, notified the country that it had extended the school opening dates by another week over ongoing heavy rains.

Kenyans are upset as a number of students had over the weekend begun their travel upcountry to their respective schools.

In a notice, the Education Ministry said,

"In the face of ongoing heavy rains, the Ministry of Education last week directed its field officers to submit data from all Basic Education learning institutions countrywide to assist the Government in assessing the readiness of the schools for the Second Term  opening Monday April 29, 2024."

It added.

"Reports received at the Ministry of Education, coordinated with data from other relevant Government agencies, show that a number of schools in various regions of the country have been adversely affected by the rains.

The devastating effects of the rains in some schools is so severe it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before watertight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of affected schools communities."

The Ministry went ahead to announce it had extended the school opening date by one week to Monday, May 6, 2024.

The statement was signed by Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu.
